The Work : The Brilliant Bit
Dear You. Dear Me.
I wrote an email to a new client this morning.
I wish someone had
a) invented email earlier and
b) emailed me the same message when I was just coming out of college.
So, I’m sending it to you, now. Just in case you need it, too.
Dear _________ ,
Great meeting you yesterday. I’m so glad we made the connection.
I’ve been thinking about our talking about your best friend and her qualities and her successes.
Maybe our focus has been drawn by her “I don’t give a fuck” aspect because that is such a powerful and unusual quality.
You may not have the “I don’t give a fuck” element in you. I know I don’t. It would be inauthentic of me to try to take on or exhibit that quality.
I think the thing that has rightly caught your eye about her is her willingness to actually be her.
It took me decades to start to find out who I was and that it would be ok, even powerful, to actually be that in the room.
The audition room, the rehearsal room. Any room.
It took me so long in part because no one stopped me early on and said, “Hey. That thing you’re worrying about revealing? That’s the brilliant bit.”
I am now officially stopping you and telling you that. Forty years is too long to wait.
